How Often Should You Really Get a Dental Cleaning and Checkup?
You've heard it since you were a kid: see the dentist every six months. But if you've ever wondered whether that rule actually applies to you, or whether it's just a number someone made up, you're not alone. The honest answer is a little more personal than "twice a year, no exceptions."
At River Hills Dentistry, we've been caring for smiles in Valrico, Brandon, and Lithia since 2023. Here's what a cleaning and checkup actually involves, and how to figure out the right schedule for you.
What Happens at a Routine Cleaning and Checkup
A typical visit covers more ground than just polishing your teeth. Most checkups include:
- A review of your recent medical and dental history
- A full exam of your teeth, gums, and mouth
- X-rays, if it's been a while or your dentist wants a closer look
- A check for early signs of gum disease
- A professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can't reach
At River Hills Dentistry, our team also offers digital X-rays, so you get a clear picture of what's going on without extra wait time. If fluoride treatment would benefit you, we'll talk through that during your visit too.
None of this is just routine for the sake of routine. Catching a small cavity or early gum inflammation at a checkup is a lot simpler, and a lot less expensive, than dealing with it after it's grown into a bigger problem.
So How Often Do You Actually Need One?
The American Dental Association puts it plainly: there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people do well with one or two visits a year. Others, depending on their history with gum disease, cavities, or other health conditions, need to come in more often.
That lines up with how we think about it at River Hills Dentistry. Most of our patients land on a six-month rhythm, but your actual recommendation depends on things like:
- How your gums have responded to cleanings in the past
- Whether you've had cavities or gum disease before
- Certain medical conditions that affect oral health, like diabetes
- How consistent your home care (brushing and flossing) already is
If you're not sure where you fall, that's a normal question to bring to your next visit. It's also one of the easiest things for us to answer once we've actually seen your mouth.
Why Skipping Visits Costs More Than You Think
Here's a number worth sitting with: the ADA estimates that 100 million Americans skip the dentist every year, even though regular exams and good home care prevent most dental problems before they start.
It's easy to put off a visit when nothing hurts. The catch is that a lot of dental issues, especially early gum disease and small cavities, don't hurt at all until they've gotten bigger. A checkup is what catches those problems while they're still simple (and affordable) to treat.
What This Looks Like at River Hills Dentistry
We've been part of the Valrico, Brandon, and Lithia community since 2023, and a lot of our patients have been with us for years. If it's been a while since your last visit, or you're just looking for a dental home that doesn't feel rushed or impersonal, our team is glad to walk you through what to expect before you ever sit in the chair.
We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans and Medicare, and we offer CareCredit financing along with an in-office discount plan for patients without insurance, so cost doesn't have to be the reason a checkup gets put off another year.
We also understand that some patients feel a little nervous about dental visits. If that's you, let our front desk know when you call. We'll take the time to explain each step and go at a pace that feels comfortable.
